About the position
The Pipe Stress Engineer is part of the Reliability and Integrity Engineering team within Chevron’s ENGINE and is responsible for providing expertise in piping design, repair, alteration, code interpretation, and post-construction repair across Chevron assets. Position will provide services for active production facilities as well as new capital projects.
Key Responsibilities
Perform piping flexibility and stress analysis for pipelines and piping systems using CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, and finite element analysis (FEA) tools (ex: PRG FEA).
- Verify stresses, strains, deflections, and nozzle loads are within allowable code limits.
- Apply advanced mechanical engineering principles, fatigue, buckling, creep and general mechanics of materials to evaluate the integrity and remaining life of piping and mechanical components.
Lead or support the design and specification of piping systems, including process, utility, and relief systems.
Ensure piping designs comply with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME , API, RP, project and company specifications).
Coordinate and review piping layout and 3D Model reviews to ensure constructability, operability, and maintainability.
Support assisting with field startup, performing troubleshooting, leading failure analysis and repair strategies.
Provide recommendations on pipe support designs
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized (AICTE) university.
Strong working knowledge and practical application of applicable piping and repair codes, including ASME B31.1, B31.3, ASME PCC 2, API 570
Skilled use of piping stress analysis software such as CAESAR II or AutoPIPE.
- Skilled use of CAD software
- Prior involvement across multiple project phases and supporting active brownfield oil and gas production facilities
Experience working with local brownfield engineering teams, EPC contractors, fabrication yards, and construction teams.
Experience participating in 3D model reviews
Experience managing technical deviations, concessions, and non-conformances with vendors and EPCs.
Experience interpreting and applying project and corporate specific specifications and operator standards.
Understanding of process safety, hazardous area classification, and machinery safeguarding.
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of experience in pipe stress analysis and piping design support
Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s or Doctorate).
Experience working in a petrochemical or refining environment.
Experience with post construction repair options for piping (e.g., sleeves, patches, weld repairs, enclosures) and validate designs for compliance with ASME PCC-2 and API 579.
Chevron ENGINE supports global operations, supporting business requirements across the world. Accordingly, the work hours for employees will be aligned to support business requirements. The standard work week will be Monday to Friday. Working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm or 1.30pm to 10.30pm.
