Instrument Engineer Site Based

We are currently recruiting an experienced site-based Instrument Engineer for a Major Global Oil & Gas Operator on a 2 year contract initially starting in October 2026. The successful candidate will provide site-based instrumentation systems engineering support to operations, ensuring the technical integrity, reliability and performance of instrumented systems across the LNG plant, utilities and associated facilities. The role is embedded within the multidisciplinary Frontline Engineering team and works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, designs, Projects and TAR teams to deliver production-focused safety and reliability outcomes. Key Responsibilities: Provide immediate, site-based instrumentation engineering support to Operations and Maintenance for safe and reliable operation of field instrumentation, control valves, analyzers, and Fire & Gas detection and protection systems. Perform technical assessments, deviation evaluations, and risk-based decision making in response to instrument equipment failures, degradation, or inspection findings. Lead or support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for instrumentation equipment failures and incidents. Implement equipment modifications and field instrumentation changes through the Management of Change (MoC) process. Collaborate with Reliability and Design / Instrumentation engineering teams to address equipment performance issues, implement improvements, and support long-term reliability strategies. Identify and approve replacement-in-kind or upgrade solutions for obsolete instrumentation and control devices in line with current standards and plant requirements. Provide engineering guidance on transmitters, analyzers, control valves, relief valve instrumentation, and Fire & Gas detection systems (flame, gas, smoke). Ensure plant technical integrity is maintained by managing instrumentation and Fire & Gas systems in line with safety case requirements, performance standards, and base design. Support field instrumentation maintenance activities including calibration strategies, fault finding, bad actor elimination, and assurance of measurement data quality. Complete startup readiness activities including loop checks, instrument functional testing, Fire & Gas system verification, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs). Qualifications & Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Instrumentation or Control Systems Engineering (or related discipline). Relevant experience providing instrumentation engineering support in a complex oil and gas operating environment (LNG, chemical plant or refinery preferred), including field instrumentation, control valves, analyzers, and Fire & Gas systems. Demonstrated strong technical competence in field instrumentation, measurement systems, control valves, analyzers, and Fire & Gas detection and protection systems, including calibration, fault finding and performance assurance. Familiarity with relevant industry standards and codes including IEC 61511 / IEC 61508 (functional safety), and practical knowledge of Australian and Western Australian regulatory requirements. Experience with Management of Change (MoC) processes, field troubleshooting, failure investigations, and development of instrumentation engineering work packages to support maintenance and operational activities. Technical Knowledge Knowledge and experience in instrumentation engineering within LNG or complex process facilities, including field instrumentation, control valves, analyzers, and Fire & Gas systems. Experience supporting turnarounds and/or projects in a live operating environment. Demonstrated ability to diagnose equipment performance issues, apply relevant standards (e.g. IEC/ ISA, AS/NZS  and ISO), and provide engineering input to reliability improvement and maintenance strategies. Familiarity with CMMS, FIRM, and instrumentation engineering tools, with sound awareness of Process Safety Management principles including HAZOP, LOPA, and functional safety lifecycle Problem Solving Demonstrated ability to diagnose and solve complex instrument and operational problems by applying structured analysis, understanding equipment behaviour and failure modes, integrating cross-functional input, evaluating risks and alternatives, and delivering practical, safe and reliable solutions. Leverages new technologies, data and innovative approaches to improve equipment performance, reliability and maintenance outcomes. Experience in operations / maintenance support roles is desirable.
