What role you will play in our team As the senior optimization engineer on our CCS team, you will shape the optimization foundation of a rapidly growing carbon capture and sequestration system on the U.S. Gulf Coast, influencing billions of dollars of infrastructure and operational decisions through advanced mathematical modeling. As part of the Low Carbon Solutions business, you will work in a dynamic, startup-like environment that leverages ExxonMobil’s scale, technical expertise, and resources to rapidly develop and deploy energy transition solutions. This role extends beyond mathematical model development. You will work directly with business stakeholders to apply optimization tools to real-world decisions, deepen your understanding of the CCS value chain, and help develop software products that enable optimization capabilities across the organization. What you will do Build optimization models that support network expansion decisions, CO₂ transportation planning, storage allocation, capital investment prioritization, and day-to-day operational decision making. Design and build optimization diagnostics, validate model formulations and solution strategies, and continuously improve model performance, scalability, maintainability, and transparency. Partner with stakeholders across the CCS business to apply optimization models to strategic and operational challenges, communicate recommendations, and incorporate business feedback into future model capabilities. Collaborate with data scientists to develop, validate, and improve surrogate models representing complex or non-linear system behavior. Collaborate with data and software engineers to integrate optimization models into robust, user-friendly tools that can be deployed and utilized across the CCS organization. About you Skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field with a strong focus on optimization. Five or more years of experience developing mathematical optimization solutions, including designing, implementing, and maintaining large-scale optimization models. Experience should include model formulation, performance tuning, solution validation, and translating business problems into optimization frameworks. Strong Python programming skills, including experience developing and maintaining optimization applications using tools such as GurobiPy, Pandas, and related scientific computing libraries. Demonstrated ability to independently develop, validate, and maintain complex optimization models with limited supervision. Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and discuss detailed implementation approaches with technical stakeholders.
