The Opportunity: KBR is looking for a Systems Engineer to support the sustainment, performance, and evolution of complex voice and data communication systems. This role offers the opportunity to work across a range of advanced technologies, engaging with stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams to deliver engineering solutions that enhance system capability, reliability, and operational effectiveness. You will apply systems engineering expertise to activities such as technical risk management, safety assurance, requirements analysis, and lifecycle support, while contributing to the delivery of critical communication and networked systems. Ideal for a proactive engineer who enjoys solving complex challenges, this position provides the autonomy to make informed technical decisions and play a key role in delivering impactful engineering outcomes. The Systems Engineer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. You will interpret and provide advice within the systems engineering function based on legislation, policy and procedures, as well as undertake technical research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessments and perform procedural or operational support work to achieve results. This is a permanent full-time opportunity and is based in Melbourne. The successful candidate must hold a NV1 security clearance or higher. Responsibilities: Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice in the field of systems engineering under limited direction. Accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations. Research, apply and contribute to the development of technical engineering reports, briefs, presentations and documentation for review. Apply technical engineering knowledge and experience, understand priorities to research and define issues and implement corrective actions. Build and sustain positive relationships with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities. Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders via reports, written correspondence, calculations, discussions and presentations. Assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing and provide recommendations for consideration. Analyse that the delivered materiel meets requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks and provide recommendations for consideration. Ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into systems engineering activities and tasks. As the ideal candidate you will bring: Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering (Systems Engineering, Electrical, Electronics, Communications, Mechatronics or related Discipline from an Australian institution or a qualification that satisfied the requirements of a Professional Engineer. At least 3 years’ experience delivering engineering outcomes in a defence environment. Good knowledge of network/communication engineering architecture. Experience in Defence Safety Engineering practices, including LMSM compliance, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Safety Case development. Experience in supporting electronic systems and OEM software solutions. Knowledge of electronics, networking technologies, and vendor-specific software platforms to be able to understand issues, system performance, and ensure reliable operation of critical systems.
